Two plaques commemorating the residents of the Land of Oświęcim have been unveiled on the Market Square in the City of Oświęcim. The first is dedicated to the Jewish citizens of Oświęcim - men, women, and children - who were murdered by the Nazis. The second commemorates the Poles who risked their lives to aid the prisoners of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp.

The Maja corporation's parking and service facility, which will provide new jobs for more than 100 people, has opened near the site of Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

The Itlagroup corporation has purchased almost five hectares of land, including buildings, which belonged to the now-liquidated Oświęcim Vehicle Repair Works on Leszczyńska Street in Oświęcim. During the occupation, this industrial land was the site of slave labor by men and women Auschwitz Concentration Camp prisoners in factories belonging to Krupp A.G. Werke and, later, to Weichsel Metall-Union Werk.

On September 15, the director of the Museum invited interested residents of Oświęcim and the vicinity to a meeting and a tour of the Auschwitz site. The event featured a presentation of new exhibition elements intended to make it easier to visit and understand the Memorial.

The fourth session of the International Auschwitz Council was held in Oświęcim from September 10-11, 2001.

A conference was organized from September 2-8 by the Bergen-Belsen Memorial and Political Education Center in Lower Saxony, Germany, the International Youth Meeting House, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim.
