After a court case that went on for four years in the Bielsko regional court, the Maja Corporation has been awarded damages from the Polish government for the suspension in 1996 of construction of the so-called "supermarket." The verdict can be appealed before a court in Katowice.

The English version of the big five-volume study of the Auschwitz concentration camp has been released.

Poland was the guest of honor at this year's 52nd annual Frankfurt Book Fair. Over 16,500 publishers from 113 countries presented their wares: some 385,000 books, of which 90,000 were new titles.

"Please don't worry about the Gravel Pit. If the solemnity or character of the place are violated in any way, I can react immediately and issue a new decision," said Ryszard Maslowski, governor of Malopolska province, after a September 18 Supreme Administrative Court verdict overturned an earlier decree by Maslowski and the minister of internal affairs and administration.

The grand opening of the Oswiecim synagogue, which belonged to the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot before the war, was held on September 12.
