Work Continues on Building A-50
Work is continuing on the adaptation of the so-called Aufnahmegebäude (now containing the visitor reception center and film screening room) to house preservation workshops and storage space.
An architectural-construction plan for adapting the unused parts of the building, designated by the Museum symbol A-50, was elaborated in 1995. It envisions the creation of preservation workshops, a landmark preservation studio, and book storage on the ground floor, with technical storage in the cellars. A separate building, known as “the umbrella,” will hold carpentry and woodworking shops, and a room for impregnating wood.
The plans were updated in the second half of 1999 and work began after a building permit was granted in 2000. Completion is projected for the end of 2002, with the building going into operation in early 2003. The work is being financed in whole by the Ronald Lauder Foundation, with which the Museum signed a contract in June 1999. The governments of France, Norway, Switzerland, Greece, and Russia have deposited $2,800,000, necessary for carrying out the plan, in the accounts of the Foundation.
