Conservationists at the Memorial Put the Arbeit macht frei Sign Back Together

The Arbeit macht frei sign over the historical gate of the Auschwitz I main camp has been put back together after being destroyed by thieves. Detailed analysis and expert advice enabled conservationists to restore it to almost exactly the condition it was in before the theft. Further measures will be taken to protect the inscription, which will probably be placed in the Museum exhibition in the future.

Brundibar – a Concert at the Oświęcim Music School

An event in the concert hall at the Karol Szymanowski State Music School First Degree in Oświęcim featured a performance of Brundibar, an opera for children by Hans Krasa, a Czech composer of Jewish origins, with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister.

The Twentieth March of the Living

About six thousand young Jews from all over the world were joined by more than a thousand young Poles in the twentieth March of the Living, held on the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Day. At the sound of the shofar they set out from the Arbeit macht frei gate at the Auschwitz I site, as they do each year. They marched to the vicinity of the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau site, where the main observances were held.

Family Support for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation

Siblings from Cincinnati, moved by an appeal from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation, organized a fundraiser at their school that brought in $1,200. The money will be added to the Foundation's Perpetual Fund, the interest from which is designated for the conservation of the grounds of the former German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp Auschwitz.
