Seminar for teachers and educators from Lithuania
At the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau the first seminar for teachers and educators from Lithuania took place. It was organized under the auspices of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust as well as the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania.
The goal of the project is to present teachers with the methods used in Holocaust education, the exchange of practical ideas on teaching about the Shoah, and the proper methods of preparing young people for visits to Memorial Sites.
The participants visited the grounds of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination Camp, attended lectures on the history of the KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, and visited the conservation workshop at the Museum as well as the Jewish Center in Oświęcim. The group also took part in workshops, which were to meant to not only deepen their knowledge about the Memorial Site, but also present active forms of teaching that are used by educators at the Museum in their work with young individuals.
In July 2012, educators from Poland and Lithuania will meet in Vilnius and Kaunas, where the second part of the seminar about sharing methods of education about the Holocaust and war crimes will be held.
In the framework of the international project, “Memorial Sites as keys to Future Education,” two international seminars for teachers and educators from Lithuania and Poland are planned. The project is financed by the European Commission’s project, Europe for Citizens.
