The main article in the second English language edition of "Oś" [Axis] magazine is a lecture by the director of Auschwitz Memorial Dr. Piotr M.A. Cywiński given for students of State Higher Vocational School in Oświęcim. The topic of the lecture was “The Future of Remembrance—A Challenge for the 21st Century”.

Impediments for visitors on March 18

On March 18, 2009 (Wednesday) between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. due to conservation works on wiring there will be a power cut in the Museum. In the ensuing situation the following impediments will appear.

UE helps to preserve Auschwitz

Poland's prime minister has appealed to leaders of EU countries for help raising euro 120 million (about $150 million) for badly needed preservation work at the sprawling former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced the government will donate euro 1 million ($1.3 million) for Auschwitz restoration work.

Will the European Union Help Conserve the Auschwitz Memorial?

The government has asked the European Union for help in maintaining the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum. €120 million is needed for conserving the time-ravaged buildings. In a special letter to the leaders of EU states, Donald Tusk is asking for special funding for the Museum. The reactions are favorable.
