II. The Auschwitz I site

1) The conservation of 11 blocks in connection with the new main exhibition

2 of the 11 blocks will be conserved between 2009 and 2012 using structural funds within the framework of the Infrastructure and Environment operating program. Subsequent work will extend to 9 blocks. In the longer term, we plan to conserve all of the other 46 historical enclosed buildings at the Auschwitz I site.

• Complete conservation of original camp blocks
- reinforcement and repair of damaged structural elements

Conservation of 1 block costs from €900 thousand to €1.4 million

Preparing all documentation and obtaining the necessary permits takes 12 to 24 months
Carrying out the conservation work on 1 block takes about 3 years.
In any given year, we plan to be working on 3 blocks at a time.

The funding required for working on 3 blocks at a time, per year, is €900 thousand to €1.4 million

2) Conservation work will also be carried out on other original Auschwitz I camp objects and structures, including:

• crematorium and gas chamber I
• wooden barracks
• historic roads
• SS garages
