For more information, contact Dr. Maria Martyniak from ICEAH:

The creation of the Auschwitz zone of interest was a result of, among other factors, the German authorities’ desire to remove witnesses of the crimes committed by the SS and to prevent contact between prisoners and the outside world. An equally important factor was the confiscation of land for the camp’s agricultural estate. Within the interest zone, eight subcamps were established, from which prisoners were sent to work in agriculture, animal husbandry, and the maintenance of fish ponds.
