Volunteer Academy 2025 | 6–12 September – Call for Participants
The Volunteer Academy is a project of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz Museum. It is aimed at adults interested in the history of the Auschwitz camp and volunteering in the Archives of the Museum. This year’s Academy will take place at the Memorial from 6 to 12 September.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn in depth about the history of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz. The program includes extended guided tours of the former camp and additional sessions led by the historians and educators of the Museum.
All sessions and meetings will be conducted in English. Participants should also have basic computer skills.
'Previous editions, both online and in-person, have attracted people from all over the world. This shows that the Museum’s projects reach a very wide audience. Volunteering at the Memorial is a personal act of commitment that builds a community aware of moral responsibility. Many participants of the Academy continue volunteering after the project ends,'said Katarzyna Marcak, the head of Volunteering and Internships at the ICEAH.
The main part of the Academy will take place in the Museum Archives. Participants will have the chance to get acquainted with the work on the Digital Archive. As part of this project, physical documents are not only scanned, but also analyzed, transcribed, and catalogued on the Memorial Archives platform.
'This year, volunteers will work on entering into the main database the documents of prisoners transferred from KL Auschwitz to KL Sachsenhausen on 27 October 1944. This transport included 2,249 people, of whom only 349 names are preserved on the existing transport lists. Thanks to cooperation with the Arolsen Archives, we obtained documents of 257 individuals from this transport, which will be processed by the Academy participants — said Anna Jawień from the Archival Analysis and Information Section.
The results of the volunteers’ work will be presented in the form of short profiles of selected Auschwitz prisoners.
Participation in the Volunteer Academy is free of charge. Participants are only responsible for their travel and insurance costs. The number of places is limited. Choice of participants is based on the number of points obtained according to the criteria listed in the application form.
