Volunteer Academy 2022. Invitation to participate in the online project.
"Volunteer Academy" is a new project of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz Memorial aimed at people interested in Auschwitz’s history and volunteering at the Memorial Archives. The Academy will run online from 16 October to 17 November. The meetings will be conducted in English.
'The idea of organising an academy was born during meetings and discussions with our volunteers. We agreed that knowledge of what happened at Auschwitz, awareness of the factors that led to this tragedy, and understanding of how the memory of history is shaped is fundamental,' said ICEAH director Andrzej Kacorzyk.
'In addition to fostering a personal commitment to remembrance, they are also a source of personal reflection on what ideologies of hatred can lead to and what our collective moral responsibility is today in opposing evil,' he emphasised.
Volunteers participating in the Academy will assist remotely in the international project "Reconstructing the identity of deportees and prisoners of KL Auschwitz," implemented by the Memorial Archives.
'It primarily involves assisting in indexing data from the original documents obtained relating to the camp prisoners. It will provide tremendous support for the calendar of transports to Auschwitz in preparation,' said the head of the Volunteer Office at the ICEAH, Katarzyna Marcak.
In addition to volunteering activities, Academy participants will also get the opportunity to learn about the history of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz.
'The academy will commence on 16 October with an online tour of the former camp. On the next day we planned an organisational meeting and a training session. However, lectures, workshops and presentations will be held every three weeks of the project duration, led by the Museum's historians and educators. There will be 2-3 such meetings each week,' added Katarzyna Marcak.
A detailed programme is available here.
Participation in the Volunteer Academy is free, with limited spots available. Participation is not determined on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested persons are requested to complete the online form by 16 September 2022.
