The Volunteer Academy 2024. Call for Participants.
The Volunteer Academy is a project of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz Museum, aimed at individuals interested in the history of the Auschwitz camp and volunteering in the Archive. This year's Academy will take place between 28 September – 5 October at the Auschwitz Museum. All sessions and meetings will be conducted in English.
Participants of the Academy will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz. The program includes extended tours of the site of the former camp, as well as additional sessions conducted by historians and educators of the Museum.
‘In previous editions of the Academy held online, participants from around the world took part, including people from Poland, the USA, Australia, Macedonia, France, Germany, Bulgaria, and Malaysia. This shows that the projects carried out by the Museum reach many places, and most importantly, many people want to get involved. Volunteering for the Memorial Site is a personal, individual commitment that builds a community aware of moral responsibility,’ said Katarzyna Marcak, who heads the Volunteer Office at the ICEAH.
The main part of the Academy will take place in the Archive of the Museum.
"This year, volunteers will be entering into the main database and indexing one of the partially reconstructed transport lists, specifically the list of 750 prisoners transferred on August 25, 1944, from KL Auschwitz to KL Neuengamme. The transport mainly consisted of electricians, locksmiths, and drivers, who, after being transferred to KL Neuengamme, were mostly employed in assembling engines and tracks in military vehicles," said Anna Jawień from the team responsible for data integration and information on Victims of KL Auschwitz.
The results of the volunteers' work will be presented in the form of presentations on the fates of Auschwitz prisoners selected by Academy participants.
The entire project will be conducted in English, and participation is free of charge. Participants only cover the costs of travel and insurance. The number of places is limited, and participation in the project is not determined by the order of applications.
This year, participants of the Volunteer Academy will be staying in the new museum hostel located right by the Memorial.
