The International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust has made available the Japanese version of the online lesson "Auschwitz – Concentration and Extermination Camp".

“We are aware that not everyone can visit the Memorial in person, so we continue to develop various online educational materials accessible from anywhere in the world. Those interested in expanding their knowledge of the history of the German Nazi camp Auschwitz can access over 30 online lessons dedicated to various aspects of the camp's operation on lesson.auschwitz.org, each translated into English. However, our main lesson, presenting the comprehensive history of Auschwitz, is already available in twelve languages—now including also Japanese,” said Agnieszka Juskowiak-Sawicka, head of E-learning at ICEAH.

In 2023, the Museum was visited by at least 5,700 visitors from Japan, who can visit the site of the former camp in a guided tour in their native language.

“Thanks to the online lesson, we can reach a much larger audience—primarily those who for various reasons cannot make such a long journey. I hope that not only individuals will take advantage of this. The lesson can also be an excellent aid for teachers. It is a compendium of knowledge about the history of Auschwitz. It includes not only a very rich historical description but also excerpts from Survivor accounts, photographs and archival documents, maps, and examples of camp art,” added Agnieszka Juskowiak-Sawicka.

The authors of the lesson are Dr. Jacek Lachendro and Dr. Piotr Setkiewicz from the Museum's Research Center. It consists of two parts. The first deals with Auschwitz as a concentration camp—its establishment, expansion, and operation. It discusses, among other things, the characteristics of different prisoner groups at the camp, their and living conditions. The topics covered include, among others, food and clothing, housing conditions, labor in the camp, punishments, executions, and medical experiments.

The second part addresses the extermination of Jews at Auschwitz. It is divided into several chapters not only on the construction and operation of the gas chambers and crematoria but also on Sonderkommando prisoners, erasing traces of the crime, issues regarding the bombing of the camp, and the number of victims.

The online lesson "Auschwitz – Concentration and Extermination Camp" is now available in the following languages:
