In mid-January 1945, due to the Soviet army breaking through the front lines and approaching Krakow, Auschwitz authorities began evacuating prisoners to concentration camps in the depths of the Third Reich. Between 17-21 January 1945, SS men led around 56,000 prisoners out of the camp and its sub-camps, forcing them to cover dozens of kilometers in difficult winter conditions.

The main marching routes led to Wodzisław Śląski and Gliwice, from where the prisoners were further transported by trains. During the march, shots were fired at prisoners who had weakened and could not walk, as well as those who attempted to escape. It is estimated that between 9,000 and 15,000 prisoners of the German Nazi Auschwitz camp died during the entire evacuation.
