New plaque in Auschwitz (continued)
A new plaque has been added to the Monument to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp Victims at the site of the Birkenau camp. It was placed where the plaque in English (now moved to the far side of the monument) used to be. The language on the new plaque is the traditional language of Sephardic Jews.
Although the plaque is already in place, its official unveiling will take place in March 2003, on the anniversary of the deportation to the Auschwitz camp of the first Jews from Salonika. More details will be announced shortly.
The costs of making and installing the new plaque, as well as of moving the English-language one, have been borne by the Jewish-Spanish Auschwitz Association, which has long been involved in efforts to commemorate the Sephardic Jews murdered in Auschwitz.
