Museum Council on the Instrumentalisation of the memory of Auschwitz Victims
The Council of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, at a meeting held online on 15 January, adopted a resolution referring to recent instances of instrumentalisation of the memory of the victims of Auschwitz in public debate.
“We ask those participating in public debate to refrain from using the memory of the victims of the terror of the German Third Reich (Poles, Roma, Jews, people of other nationalities, citizenships and identities) for current political purposes. The gas chambers and death marches are facts that fill both survivors and later generations with horror. The immensity of the victims' suffering and the need to commemorate their fate are the reasons for the numerous institutions created to commemorate their martyrdom. We call on all to respect and honour the memory of the victims”.
During the meeting, the Deputy Director of the Museum, Andrzej Kacorzyk, also briefed the Council members on the upcoming commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz German Nazi concentration and extermination camp.
