International Holocaust Remembrance Day at UNESCO
On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, UNESCO is organising an online commemoration event starting at 18.00 (CET) on 27 January.
Speakers will be:
- UN Secretary-General António Guterres
- UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz
- President of Israel Isaac Herzog
- Director of the Auschwitz Memorial Piotr M. A. Cywiński
Musicians will also perform during the event: violinist Renaud Capuçon at the UNESCO headquarters and singer Sofia Falkovitch at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris.
The main commemoration of the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz will take place at the site of the Auschwitz Memorial. The main theme will be the beginning of the extermination in the German Nazi camp Auschwitz, which took place in the spring of 1942. The event will start at 16.00 (CET). Details at: 77.auschwitz.org
Auschwitz is, for the world today, a symbol of the Holocaust and atrocities of World War II. In 2005, the United Nations adopted 27 January as the International Holocaust Victims Remembrance Day.
