Ludzie dobrej woli. Księga Pamięci mieszkańców Ziemi Oświęcimskiej niosących pomoc więźniom KL Auschwitz [People of Good Will: Memorial Book of Oświęcim Land Residents Who Aided Auschwitz Concentration Camp Prisoners]. Henryka Świebockiego, editor.

About the book

This book is devoted to the residents of the Land of Oświęcim and the vicinity who risked their lives to render aid to Auschwitz Concentration Camp prisoners under the German occupation from 1940 to 1945.

The introduction presents the things done by civilians and resistance organizations from the Land of Oświęcim to rescue Auschwitz prisoners, including the aid rendered during the liquidation and evacuation in January 1945, and the gathering of evidence about crimes committed by the SS.

The bulk of the book consists of a list of over 1,200 individuals who have been identified so far as having sided prisoners. There are short biographical notes and descriptions of the kind of aid offered.

The concluding section is a selection of secret messages smuggled out of the camp, postwar accounts, and memoirs by prisoners and participants in the aid action. There are also artistic works made in secret by prisoners and offered as expressions of gratitude to local residents who aided them.

The Book Launch

The book launch was held at the International Youth Meeting House in Oświęcim on October 17.

After the launch, mass was said at the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the intention of the residents of the Land of Oświęcim who aided Auschwitz Concentration Camp prisoners.
