George W. Bush at Auschwitz
President George W. Bush and his wife Laura paid a private visit to the Museum today. The guests toured both parts of the site of the camp and placed floral tributes in commemoration of the victims at the Death Wall in Auschwitz I and at the monument to the victims in Auschwitz II-Birkenau.
The Bushes, acknowledging their appreciation to the administration and staff of the Auscwitz-Birkenau State Museum, wrote the following inscription in the Guest Book: "Thank you sincerely for the deeply moving tour. In dedicating your lives to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and the Martyrdom of Poles, you honor all who were victims here. May your work inspire future generations to stand ever vigilant against the return of such unspeakable evil to our world."
The first US president to tour the site of the death camp was Gerald R. Ford, who paid tribute to the victims of mass murder in July, 1975. In September 1987, George H. W. Bush, then vice-president, toured the site of Auschwitz Concentration Camp.
