From Brittany to Auschwitz by Bicycle

18-07-1999

Patrick Grisel set out for Auschwitz from Brittany by bicycle on June 14. At the end of his 2,200 km. journey, he officially presented the Museum with a work by the Bretagne artist Roland Wieder, titled Six Million (22 of 23 relatives of the artist never returned from Auschwitz concentration camp).

Grisel, a recently retired car salesman, set himself two goals: demonstrating the possibilities for an active life open to retirees, and raising the awareness of his neighbors about the history of Auschwitz and its meaning. His progress was covered by the local Bretagne press and the sponsor of his journey, Vie et Sant" publishers.

Throughout his arduous journey, Grisel was accompanied by the question, "What would I have done if I had been 25 then and had seen the persecution of the Jews?" The question remained unanswered after his visit to the site of the death camp.
