Darfur Appeal from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum

05-07-2007

On the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, we have gathered for an international conference on Remembrance, Awareness, and Responsibility.

This responsibility extends to the past, the present, and the future. It is not limited to a single place, country, or continent—it is a global responsibility.

The awareness of the death of millions of innocent people in the times of the Holocaust and the concentration camps, the awareness of the consequences of hatred, racism, and totalitarian ideas, and the feeling of responsibility for future generations make us sensitive to all brutality and massacres.

Today, we cannot remain indifferent to the fate of the people of Darfur.

We appeal to all governments for wise intervention.

We appeal to civic organizations for aid.

We appeal to journalists for broad, insightful information about Darfur.

There was too much indifference to the Holocaust. Today, we need a feeling of responsibility for the people of Darfur.
