Damages Awarded to the Maja Corporation
After a court case that went on for four years in the Bielsko regional court, the Maja Corporation has been awarded damages from the Polish government for the suspension in 1996 of construction of the so-called "supermarket." The verdict can be appealed before a court in Katowice.
Under the Bielsko judgment, the Polish state treasury should pay Maja 1,400,000 złoty ($340,000) plus interest, as well as covering court costs. The Maja project was halted even though it was being carried out in accordance with the law. Strong protests by international Jewish organizations were cited as the cause for the halt.At present, Maja is building a parking complex with accompanying service facilities in the vicinity of the death camp site. The parking lot is slated to have a capacity of 150 vehicles. There will also be a fast food bar.
