Competition Announced for a Poster Commemorating the Holocaust
Warsaw, February 7 (PAP-Polish Press Agency) – A poster competition on the theme of “The Holocaust—Eternal Memory,” organized by the United Nations Information Center, the Shalom Foundation, and the Polish Ministry of National Education, is intended to foster knowledge about the Holocaust, encourage sensitivity towards others, and promote the humanistic values associated with the struggle against intolerance, xenophobia, discrimination, and racism.
The competition is open to secondary-school students working in a graphics technique of their choice. The creators of the best entries will receive prizes, and their work will be shown at an exhibition in Warsaw. The winning work will be used as a visual theme for projects connected with the observance of Holocaust Victims Remembrance Day in 2008.
The artists who create the three best works will receive a special prize: the Shalom Foundation is offering them an all-expenses-paid weekend in Warsaw from September 9-11, 2007, along with tickets to the “Singer’s Warsaw” Jewish Culture Festival scheduled to be underway at the time.
The competition is associated with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, celebrated several days ago. The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the Day in November 2005, and the chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp by the Soviet army on January 27, 1945.
The deadline for submissions is May 15. (PAP)
