Communiqué from the tenth session of the International Auschwitz Council

22-06-2005

The meeting in Warsaw (June 20-21) was largely devoted to matters connected with the work of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim.

The Council noted with interest the great rise in the number of visitors to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, and the resulting need for urgent solutions to the problems of transport and the provision of extended parking lots near the Museum grounds at Birkenau and the so-called Judenrampe.

The Council is commissioning designs for a solution to transport issues in that area, in order to initiate fundraising for the task.

The Council also supports the position of the Museum and the Commune of Oświęcim on the continuation of the third phase of the Government Strategic Oświęcim Program in the years 2007-2011. The Program should be a permanent element in the concern by the Polish government for appropriately maintaining the area around the Museum in Oświęcim and Brzezinka.
