Auschwitz State Museum Director Jerzy Wróblewski Awarded Gloria Artis Medal for Service to Culture

21-06-2006

Minister of Culture and National Heritage Kazimierz Michał Ujazdowski has awarded the Gloria Artis—Service to Culture medal to outgoing Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum director Jerzy Wróblewski.

Wróblewski has been director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum since 1990. Under his leadership, the Museum at the site of the Nazi German concentration camp has become a modern institution that is open to the outside world and maintains permanent contact and cooperation with many kindred establishments around the world, such as the Holocaust Museum in Washington and the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem.

Wróblewski was also one of the initiators of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp Victims Memorial Foundation and a member of the board of the Central Prisoners-of-War Museum in Łambinowice-Opole.

Jerzy Wróblewski is retiring this year. Piotr Cywiński will assume the director's responsibilities on September 1.
