Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation Folder Wins Award

13-05-2011

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation folder "The preservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Our responsibility for future generations" has been recognized by the British D&AD (Design & Art Direction) organization as one of the best designed publications in the world.

The English-language publication by the Foundation was honored in the graphic design category and will be featured in the Design and Art Directors Book. Additionally, photographs by Peter Thorpe used in the publication obtained the prestigious Association of Photographers award for 2010 in the “Commercial Use — Design Series” category.

The folder was made pro bono by the British firm So Design Consultants. “Our collaboration with the foundation team, and the staff at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum allowed us to create a brochure which uses sensitive design, with powerful new photography which evokes a depth of meaning,” said Steve Haskins, creative director of the firm. “This recognition for our work is reassuring in that the fundraising brochure has attracted attention through good design, promoting strong messages sensitive to the cause. This project was self initiated by so-design, a project from the heart where we have a genuine desire to provide support for this cause,” he added.

“Auschwitz-Birkenau is the most famous Memorial in the world. In attempting to raise funds for its further preservation, we must carry on a discourse at the highest, global level,” said Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation president Dr. Piotr M.A. Cywiński. “We realize that at the interface of culture and fundraising it is not easy to get it right with questions of memory, identity, death, or the boundaries of being a person/ This makes it all the more cheering that our largely intuitive efforts have been noticed and appreciated. All of us have one thing in mind: This Place must remain eloquent. For the generations,” added Piotr Cywiński.

The folder presents the most important planned conservation projects, covering the grounds of the Auschwitz II-Birkenau site above all: the conservation of the brick and wooden barracks, the extant ruins, and the wooden guard towers. The publication also contains basic information about the mission, structure, and work of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation. It is supplemented in its entirety by photographs of the Memorial.
