7th International Conference: Medical Review - Auschwitz: Medicine Behind the Barbed Wire". 6-8 October 2026
The international conference Medical Review Auschwitz: Medicine Behind the Barbed Wire, will take place on 6 –8 October 2026 in Kraków, Poland. The Auschwitz Memorial is one of the partners of the event.
The aim of the conference is to educate the global medical community about medical ethics and practice in the context of World War II, to look at the behavior of doctors and other medical professionals imprisoned in German Nazi concentration camps, ghettos, or other places of detention, as well as to expose the abuses and ethical violations, with the intention of demonstrating the implications of the history of medicine during this period for modern medical practice and health care policy.
This international event is part of the Medical Review – Auschwitz project, dedicated to preserving and sharing the legacy of research published in Przegląd Lekarski – Oświęcim (1961–1991), one of the earliest efforts to document Nazi medical crimes.
The conference partners are: the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado, the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics, the International Chair in Bioethics, the FASPE Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, the Kraków Regional Medical Chamber, and the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków.
The conference is co-funded by the Polish state budget through the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education under the "Vectors of Science" program, as well as by the Finkelstein Foundation.
