The main topic of the 71st anniversary will “Returns”. "Auschwitz survivors, after liberation had to recreate conducive conditions for normal life. Some returned to their families, to devastated cities, such as Warsaw destroyed by the Germans; some event went through of were murdered in Stalinist torture chambers. Others tried to recreate a normal life after the hells of the Holocaust, among others, creating the new state of Israel", said the director of the Auschwitz Museum, Dr. Piotr M.A. Cywiński.

"Remembering about all the victims, in a special way during the coming anniversary we wish to commemorate those who despite the huge trauma, made attempts to return to a normal life," he added.

Until the liberation of the camp area by the Red Army, the German Nazis murdered approx. 1.1 million people in Auschwitz, mostly Jews, but also Poles, the Roma people, Soviet prisoners of war and people of other nationalities.
