Memorial Book. Transportations of Poles to KL Auschwitz from Wielkopolska, Pomorze, Ciechanów and Białystok Areas 1940-1944 is a new three-volume scientific publication issued by the Auschwitz Museum in Polish language version. Prepared by the Museum’s historian, Bohdan Piętka, it presents the fates of 5,453 prisoners sent by the Germans to Auschwitz in 84 transports from western and northern Polish lands incorporated into the German Reich.

A group of 25 educators from Israel participated in a specialist seminar entitled “Auschwitz in the collective consciousness in Poland and around the world. The role and significance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial for Jews and Poles,” which was held from 21st July to 1st August. It was organised by the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in close cooperation with the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem.

On the night of 2 to 3 August 1944, the Germans liquidated the so-called Gypsy family camp (Zigeunerfamilienlager) of Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Nearly 3000 children, women and men of the last Roma prisoners were murdered in the gas chambers. Several hundred people attended the ceremony dedicated to the 69th anniversary of the event, which took place at the former German Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

Students from such countries as Israel, Sri Lanka, Greece and Great Britain participated in the Summer Academy, a four-day English-language seminar by the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust.

69 years ago, on 1 August 1944, the Warsaw Uprising began. On the anniversary of this event, promptly at 17.00 – the commencement of fighting by the insurgents at the "W" hour – the director of the Museum, Dr Piotr M.A. Cywiński, laid a wreath at the Death Wall and paid tribute to the heroes and victims of the Uprising — including the thousands of residents of the capital deported to Auschwitz.
