The International Auschwitz Council on the Finances and Preservation of Memorials in Poland

The twentieth meeting of the International Auschwitz Council was held in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland. Professor Władysław Bartoszewski chaired the meeting. The main subjects of discussion were issues connected with the financing of memorials located on the former grounds of German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers in occupied Poland....

When one looks at the table full of medical instruments (shown on cover), which were most likely used at Auschwitz, it is hard to control one’s emotions and imagination. Many questions arise immediately. How easy it is to change manmade implements to save lives into tools that inflict pain and dehumanize. That happens when a person is treated as an object to which everything can be done. That is how doctors performed experiments in Auschwitz. The number of visitors to the Auschwitz Memorial in the last decade has increased threefold. Last year saw another record—1.3 million people, mainly from abroad, visited the Museum. In the near future, the adjacent bus depot will be transformed into a new visitors center. In the competition to develop this plan, KKM Kozień Architekci was awarded first prize.
