AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU FORMER GERMAN NAZI CONCENTRATION AND EXTERMINATION CAMP
Former Auschwitz prisoner Batsheva Dagan donated to the Auschwitz Museum Collections a unique personal item – a pair of tiny shoes made in the camp by her fellow inmate.
Over 1.72 million people visited the Auschwitz Memorial in 2015. Never before in the space of a single year have so many people familiarized themselves at first hand with the significance of the space of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp.
Special films prepared by the PITAGORAS Development Association in cooperation with the Auschwitz Museum bring the history of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp closer to the deaf visiting the Auschwitz Memorial.
In connection with the World Youth Day (WYD), scheduled to take place next year in Cracow, the Auschwitz Memorial and Museum will be accessible to visitors on special conditions. Changes in the organisation of tours are the result of huge interest in the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau on the part of participants of the WYD.
On 27 January 2016, the 71st anniversary event commemorating the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz will take place at the Memorial Site. The President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda has extended his honorary patronage over the event.
Auschwitz Memorial it is not only a vast territory and genuine post-camp blocks, barracks, guard towers… but also dozen thousands of exhibits of particular character, meaning and symbology. Memory is not given once and for all. When the last witnesses and survivors pass away, we need to build it collectively on what remains: accounts of former prisoners and genuine memorabilia connected with KL Auschwitz.
