MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU FORMER GERMAN NAZI
CONCENTRATION AND EXTERMINATION CAMP

IAC Meetings

Meeting X: 20-21 June 2005

15-09-2008

The session was devoted primarily to the question of the educational programmes of the International Centre of Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, which is presently being formed.

The Council examined a comprehensive presentation prepared by the Museum. The Council members paid a visit of inspection to the so-called Theatergebeaude, which will accommodate the Centre. The Council resolved to call for the appointment of a government plenipotentiary for matters connected with the creation of the Centre, and approved the composition of the Centre's Board, which will be appointed by the Minister of Culture upon the Council's recommendation.

The Council also heard a report by the Museum's directors about the latest important events, including the 60th anniversary of the camp's liberation, the opening of the French and Dutch pavilions, the opening of the Judenrampe and Red House to the public, the jubilee March of the Living, and the 65th anniversary of the first transport to Auschwitz. The Council considered the very difficult economic situation of the museum at Sobibor, on the subject of which it adopted a resolution; acquainted itself with the project of the Institute of Peace and Reconciliation, being created by Mr. Fred Schwartz; and expressed a series of opinions about the current work of the directors of the Museum in Auschwitz.
