Meeting VIII: 1-3 June 2004

The International Auschwitz Council primarily discussed further work on creating the International Centre of Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, saying that this work should lead to the official opening of the Centre on 27 January 2004.

The Council also considered the results of a study by a group of UNESCO experts into the environs of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the preparations to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in January.
Members of the Council visited the site of the extermination camp in Treblinka and met with the people responsible for the Mausoleum, and also attended the opening of the new memorial to the former extermination camp at Belzec
