Traffic disruptions in Oświęcim and Brzeznika on 27 January

18-01-2025

On January 27, 2025, we will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz. Due to the organization of the event and associated security requirements, there will be temporary traffic disruptions and restrictions on roads in Oświęcim and its vicinity.

“These exceptional commemorations will be followed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide and are of great importance for Poland’s image, reminding the world of history, the value of memory, and unity. We are doing everything possible to minimize the inconvenience. However, we recognize that moving around the city and the Oświęcim area, as well as transit, will be significantly hampered on this day,” said Bartosz Bartyzel, spokesperson for the Auschwitz Museum.

The logistics of the anniversary event are being organized in cooperation with the Town Hall, Municipality Office, County Office, Police, Fire Brigade, and other services, all of which are making every effort to facilitate daily functioning for residents on this significant day.

The most significant restrictions will occur in the Zasole district of Oświęcim and in Brzezinka, in the immediate vicinity of both parts of the Museum: Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

From midnight on the night of January 26/27 (Sunday/Monday), Leszczyńska Street, from Legionów to the viaduct leading to Brzezinka, will be closed to traffic.

On January 27, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, the following roads will be closed:

In Brzezinka: Męczeństwa Narodów (from Brzozowa to the bypass road), Ofiar Faszyzmu (from Brzozowa to Pławska, including the bypass road – except for those traveling to the open sector of the commemorations), part of Pławska Street (from Ofiar Faszyzmu to the village of Pławy), and Do Pomnika and Kombatantów streets.
Access to Brzezinka from Oświęcim will be possible only via Brzozowa Street.

Temporary traffic halts on transit routes will occur between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM due to the movement of several dozen motorcades carrying official and international delegations.

Specialized services are responsible for planning the routes of official delegations and securing the roads. The Museum is cooperating with these services to minimize disruptions. However, the inability to use Ostatni Etap Street as a main access route to Brzezinka—the site of the main commemorations—presents additional challenges for the city’s infrastructure. Efforts have been made to streamline traffic and reduce congestion.

“We would like to express our deep gratitude to all residents of Oświęcim, Brzezinka, as well as Pławy, Harmęże, and Babice, for their understanding, patience, and support in organizing this event. This cooperation is invaluable, and your recognition of the significance of this anniversary reflects the openness and strength of the local community, on which I know I can always rely,” emphasized Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński, Director of the Museum.

If anyone residing in the areas of the strictest restrictions requires documentation (e.g., for their employer) regarding the difficulties in moving around, please contact us via email at . All requests will be reviewed, and information will be issued within two business days.
