The 11th Edition of the “Resettlement — Totalitarianism — The Holocaust” Master’s Degree Program

April 4th, 2009, the next , “Resettlement — Totalitarianism — The Holocaust”, organized by the Pedagogical University of Cracow and International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust began.

On Saturday, April 4th, around forty individuals have started their master’s degree studies “Resettlement — Totalitarianism — The Holocaust”. The director of the Pedagogical University Historical Institute, Prof. Mark Wilczyński, handed the alumni of the last edition their diplomas.

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Witold Kulesza from the Łódz University gave a lecture entitled, “The Auschwitz lie in light of Polish and German criminal law.”

— The program is done in cooperation with the Pedagogical University Historical Institute in Cracow and the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. Participants are not only teachers dealing with humanities, but they are also religion teachers, museologists, guides, and others interested in gaining a deeper knowledge in this subject matter – said Dr. Piotr Trojański, director of the program.

— So far, there have been ten editions of the program – said Krystyna Oleksy, director of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. – And in recent years we have trained several hundred teachers and there are still many who are interested. That’s why we plan to start the Second Stage Master’s Degree “Resettlement — Totalitarianism — The Holocaust”.

This program aimed at expanding knowledge in certain aspect of 20th Century history. The subjects covered are the history of totalitarian systems, the Second World War, with particular emphasis on history of the Holocaust, as well as presenting the history and culture of the Jewish and Roma people. Lecturers are researchers from Pedagogical University in Cracow, State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau, and other Polish universities – historians, sociologists, and literature experts.

The program lasts three semesters, until July 2010. The graduation requirement – other than taking part in all courses – is writing a master’s thesis on a chosen subject under the care of a promoter.
