Students to Return to Auschwitz Museum for Internships This Summer

12-03-2007

A new group of students from an institution of higher education in Oświęcim will have their summer work experience at the Auschwitz Museum. Arrangements were made during a meeting between Andrzej Kacorzyk, director of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, and Professor Lucjan Suchanek, rector of the State Higher Vocational School.

Kacorzyk, who is also chairman of the Powiat local government council, mentioned the fruitful experience of such work-study programs in the past. “We are open to further cooperation,” said Kacorzyk. “We declare a willingness to accept a larger group of students than last year.”

Patrycja Duc, a second-year student, helped out at the Museum last year. She worked at filing books and folders. She had never thought about working at the Museum in the future, but she enjoyed her experience and the atmosphere she found there.

She and her classmates worked at the Museum for several weeks and learned a great deal about how the institution functions. Several of last year’s interns have continued working at the Museum.

“They are volunteers in the information section at the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust,” said Kacorzyk. “They monitor the press for stories connected with the Museum, while others are involved in the Spoken History project, where they make copies of recordings featuring accounts by former Auschwitz prisoners.”
