Students affiliated with the Volkswagen concern at the Auschwitz Museum
Under the supervision of museum specialist, the youth assisted in conservation of footwear and prisoner bunks as well as performed clean up work at the site of the former Nazi German concentration camp.
The main aim of the project is to assist in protecting the authentic remains of the former camp. In addition to field work, the young people visited the Memorial Site as well as participated in activities concerning the operation of the museum conservator's workshop, during which they came to know the basic issues and techniques of conservation.
“A chosen group of people, under the supervision of museum conservators, have done preservation work on approximately 600 shoes. The also prepared several wooden bunks for transport. Work related to completion and replacement of barbed wire fencing was carried out, as well as the painting of fence posts and preservation of the guardhouse at Auschwitz I,” said Aleksandra Papis, Head of Conservation.
The Museum’s cooperation with Volkswagen has been going on for over 20 years. “Every year, we are visited by several groups of youth, which include about 100 people. Their task is to perform a variety of work at the Memorial Site, such as helping out in the conservation workshops as well as clean up work,” said Anna Płoszczyca, Head of Volunteering.
