Sixtieth Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation Draws Near

20-10-2004

The working group dealing with the sixtieth anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp went into action last Tuesday. The anniversary comes next January 27.

Andrzej Przewoźnik, general secretary of the Council for the Protection of Monuments to Fighting and Martyrdom, visited Oświęcim. He is responsible for organizing the commemoration. He met with local officials and visited the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

According to Przewoźnik, the scenario for the observances must meet the expectations of various groups so that all of those involved can pay the appropriate tribute to the victims of Auschwitz. The main observances will be held at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. A detailed plan is still in preparation. A program commemorating the liberation of the city is also under preparation.

The working group that met on Tuesday includes Museum director Jerzy Wróblewski, Oświęcim mayor Janusz Marszalek, and representatives of the Polish president’s office, the foreign affairs ministry, the ministry of internal and administrative affairs, the ministry of culture, the wojewoda of Małopolska, and local governments.

The organizers expect about 10,000 people, including heads of state, to take part in the ceremonies on January 27.
