Seminar for Israeli Educators. Auschwitz in the collective consciousness of Poland and the world
Israeli teachers and guides from the Yad Vashem Memorial Institute in Jerusalem attended the inauguration of a seminar titled Auschwitz in the Collective Consciousness of Poland and the World: The Role and Significance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial for Jews and Poles.
The subjects include the history of the German occupation of Poland, the Auschwitz camp and its significance for various ethnic groups, and the role of guides at the Museum.
The teachers from Israel will also be able to talk with former Auschwitz prisoners and join workshops in the Archives and Museum Collections Department, and at the national exhibitions.
Contemporary issues under discussion include the conflicts between Polish and Jewish memory, the sociology of Polish anti-Semitism, and the political and social history of Poland since 1989.
In addition to the lectures, they will visit sites connected with Polish history and culture, including Wawel Castle, the Czartoryski Museum, and the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
They will also take part in the Jewish Culture Festival, which is underway in the Kazimierz district of Cracow, and visit the Bełżec Memorial.
The seminar is organized by the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust and Yad Vashem. Over 200 Israeli educators have attended seminars in Poland since 1993.
