Recruitment for the seminar for educators at Yad Vashem has concluded

25-09-2010

The International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust has concluded the recruiting process for this year’s seminar, “Judaism—History and Culture of Polish Jews—Holocaust” at Yad Vashem, which is organized for Polish teachers, guides, museum curators, and educators engaged in teaching about Auschwitz and the Holocaust.

Interest in participating in the seminar increases year to year and for this year’s edition a record number of almost 100 individuals have applied: teachers, guides, and representatives of various institutions involved in education about the Holocaust. These individuals wrote in their applications about work conducted so far in developing and implementing projects in the area of education.

'Among the criteria considered when selecting participants was the completion of postgraduate course entitled “Totalitarianism—Nazism—Holocaust”. But above all, we paid particular attention to the substantive quality of the projects already completed by candidates. Not only those related to teaching the history of Auschwitz and the Holocaust, but also those that commemorate the victims, as well as work within contemporary or modern Polish—Jewish relations' said Alicia Białecka, head of the Program Section ICEAH. 'We want individuals to take part in the project who for the first time will be able to compare their experience with the methodology used at Yad Vashem, and secondly, that the knowledge they gain during the seminar, they will be able to use in practice in their daily educational work'.

'This year the choice was very difficult, for each place there were more than four candidates' notes, Krystyna Oleksy, Director of the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. – It is a pity that we could not qualify more individuals, but we hope that at least some of them will have a chance next year.

The seminar will consist of three parts. At the beginning of one day organizational meeting and study tour will be held at the Museum to prepare the participants for the trip. The second part will be a twelve-day course at the Yad Vashem Memorial Institute in Israel, including lectures, and workshops on the methodology of teaching about the Holocaust and the contemporary problems of the state of Israel, as well as a meeting with survivors, and a travel programs. The project will end with a one-day seminar summary session.

Since 1993, the seminar, “Judaism - History and Culture of Polish Jews—Holocaust”, has been jointly organized by the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem and the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau. This project is an important element of the long-term cooperation between both institutions, which is an essential part of joint educational projects. So far, nearly 500 teachers, educators and guides have attended the seminars. This year’s visit to Yad Vashem, is scheduled from November 14 to 26, 2010
