One Million People Visited the Site of Auschwitz Nazi German Camp in 2006
About one million people visited the site of the Nazi Auschwitz Camp in 2006. The number of visitors to the buildings and exhibitions at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum has been rising steadily for several years. Attendance in 2006 exceeded that of the previous year.
There are now almost 200 guides, specially trained in their subject matter and foreign languages, working at the grounds and in the buildings of the former camp.
Andrzej Kacorzyk, organizational director of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, noted that this year’s attendance topped last year’s record-breaking figures. “The reasons for this, as in the year before, can be found in our country’s increasing popularity with foreign tourists, and ever-improving connections for travelers. The Museum of the Warsaw Uprising and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, both of which present dramatic 20th-century events, are the museums with the highest attendance figures in Poland,” he said.
Citizens of 94 different countries visited Auschwitz.
The breakdown of visitors, similar to that in previous years, was as follows:
- Poland – 341 000
- USA – 96 000
- UK – 57 200
- Italy – 51 000
- Germany – 50 200
- France – 39 100
- Israel – 37 200
- South Korea – 35 400
- Norway – 30 600
- Spain – 23 300
