Museum Concludes 60th Anniversary Observances

17-07-2007

A meeting with retired and active Museum staff on Friday, July 6, concluded the string of events marking the 60th anniversary of the institution. Three temporary exhibitions opened and the book Tear It Down and Plow It Under...? was published, but the centerpiece was the international conference on Remembrance, Awareness, and Responsibility.

Director Piotr M. A. Cywiński thanked all the staff members for the contribution they make every day to maintaining the Memorial. He presented them with certificates, medals struck to mark the occasion, and invitations to a special gathering at the nearby International Youth Meeting House, which has close relations with the Museum.

The staff members were greeted at the Meeting House with a plenteous meal accompanied by wine and a surprise—a large-screen slide show of photographs depicting the everyday “routine” work of the more than 250 people responsible for the fitting commemoration of the victims and the smooth functioning of the Museum.

The gathering was an ideal occasion for friendly chatter and getting to know each other better. Those with sporting inclinations lined up for a chance to play ping-pong and table football.

On Monday, July 9, everyone except the retirees went back to everyday reality, carrying on the vital work of maintaining and commemorating the site of the Nazi German concentration camp.
