Maja Goes Bankrupt

01-05-2004

A Cracow court has ruled that the Maja company of Oświęcim is bankrupt. In early March, the firm had debts of over 12 million zloty. The Maja company gained notoriety when it began erecting commercial buildings near the site of the Nazi death camp.

The court ruling leaves open the possibility for Maja to continue trying to reach agreements with its creditors, and thus avoid liquidation. If such arrangements are not worked out, the court will appoint a syndic to carry out the liquidation of the firm’s remaining assets. Maja board chairwoman Marta Marszałek, who is the wife of Oświęcim mayor Janusz Marszałek, claims that there is a chance of reaching agreement with the creditors.

As we wrote in an article on “Marszałek’s Two Roles” on February 11, the Oświęcim mayor continues to be involved in the running of the firm he founded, despite holding public office. Maja shareholders recently decided to change the firm’s name to Partner SA, but the name switch has not yet been recorded in the National Court Registry.
