Headphone System for Visitors

08-04-2008

Starting in April, visitors to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum will be able to use a new headset-based guide system, which is being introduced because of the rising number of visitors to the Memorial. The new system makes it possible to maintain visitor service at a professional standard, even when many groups are touring the Museum simultaneously.

Similar systems are used successfully at the Vatican, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the Yad Vashem institute.

"We have been working on this integrated system for over two years. The important thing for us is to maintain contact between visitors and the guide. This is why we are not planning to introduce 'audio-guide' type recordings," said Andrzej Kacorzyk, organizational director of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust. "The headsets will enable us to make listening more comfortable while reducing the noise level in the exhibition."

Starting April 15, all organized groups of more than 10 people will use the system. The headsets will be in use only at the Auschwitz I site. The fee for headset rental will be 4 zloty per person.
