“Auschwitz - history and symbol” - seminar for Ukrainian teachers and educators

On 23-26 July 2018, the International Centre for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum organised another edition of the seminar “Auschwitz - history and symbol” for the first time addressed to Ukrainian teachers and educators. It was attended by 23 persons from different parts of Ukraine who are professionally involved with the dissemination of the knowledge of the II World War, and particularly the Holocaust. For the majority of the participants it was not just the first visit to the Memorial, but the first visit to Poland. The partner in the organisation of the project was “TKUMA” Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies in Dnipropetrovsk.

The core of the seminar programme was a two-day study tour around the site of the former Nazi Germany concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau during which the participants explored all the significant places related to the five-yearhistory of the camp’s operation. The second element of the seminar was classes and visits to different departments of the modernMemorial - among others; thegroup had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with documents collected and stored in the Archive, visited the exhibition titled Art in the camp, which is presentedin the Museum Collections. On the final day, the participants went to Cracow, where they visited Kazimierz - the former Jewish quarter, site of the former ghetto in Podgórze and an exhibition in the Schindler's Factory, which aimed to give them a picture of the diversity of the Jewish community before the war.
