About anti-Semitism, for teachers
“Anti-Semitism — old and new prejudices” — is the title of a new handbook for teachers, created by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in cooperation with Polish experts from the Center of the Polish-German Association in Cracow and the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust.
The publication is part of an educational packet to teach Jewish history and about anti-Semitism, which consists of, in addition to the above-mentioned handbook, three topic based workbooks:
- Part 1. History of anti-Semitism in Europe until 1945.
- Part 2. Anti-Semetism — A constant struggle?
- Part 3. Prejudice. U2?
Each part consists of six, two page chapters that contain factual information, illustrations, and activities for students. The packet was published by Center of the Polish-German Association in Cracow thanks to funding from the National Ministry of Education. It has been recommended by the national minister of education as recommended means for educating about history and society at the primary school level and in the gymnasium schools. The educational materials can be used in Polish language lessons and other educational courses.
This educational guide is made up of three thematic units corresponding to the titles of individual activity books. In addition to a short summary of each unit, it includes: a list of teaching objectives, key concepts and guidelines for the implementation of exercises. In the guide you can also find answers to some of the questions contained in the activity books and a glossary of selected terms that are found in the materials. Diversity of the work with educational materials can be maintained by selecting different exercises, which differ in terms of the form, type of activity, as well as the degree of difficulty. The first activities in each guide are generally the easiest. The last are the most difficult – requiring students to work alone or in groups.
The educational packet is given free of charge to teachers who take part in seminars dealing with the subjects of the history of Jewish people and anti-Semitism, organized by the organization responsible for its creation. An electronic version of the packet is available for download on the Internet.
