Camp Art in KL Auschwitz

The aim of the lecture is to acquaint the audience with works of art by Auschwitz prisoners. It is combined with a presentation of selected works of art by prisoners, conceived as historical documents. They primarily consist of paintings, graphic works, sculptures, and utilitarian objects created on orders from the camp authorities, for the needs of the camp, and on private commissions from SS men during the camp's existence. An extremely interesting category are works created illegally by prisoners. The circumstances under which the works were created and the importance of art in the camp's living conditions are discussed during the lectures. The talk also presents works created after liberation by artists - former prisoners, witnesses of the events portrayed in the paintings, and contemporary artists inspired by Holocaust themes.
