Description

This issue comprises articles on: the resistance movement outside the camp, a profile of Stefan Jasieński and the male camp (Sector BIb) in Birkenau.

Henryk Świebocki in his article, The Resistance Movement Outside the Camp and its Assistance to Auschwitz Prisoners, describes activities and engagement of Polish civilians and organizations outside the camp. The author presents various forms of assistance, e.g. smuggling food and medicine to the camp, aiding escapees, exchanging letters and secret messages, smuggling secret documents which were drawn up by the camp resistance movement and passing information to the public about crimes which were committed in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.

Adam Cyra writes a profile of Stefan Jasieński. Stefan Jasieński, pseudonym “Urban”, was a parachutist of “Cichociemni”(Silent-and-dark) group who was involved in the resistance movement outside the camp. He was arrested by the SS near Oświęcim and imprisoned in the Death Block. In January 1945 he perished in the Auschwitz camp in mysterious circumstances.

Irena Strzelecka focuses on the male camp (Sector BIb) in Birkenau and its operation from March 1942 until July 1943 when it was transferred to Sector BIId. The author describes the construction of the camp, its management, living conditions, prisoners’ labor, the so called camp hospital and resistance movement.
