An English translation of the second and third part of former Auschwitz prisoner August Kowalczyk’s autobiographical novel, published several years ago in Polish as Refren kolczastego drutu [A Barbed Wire Refrain]. The first part recounted August Kowalczyk’s Auschwitz fate from the moment his imprisonment began to his dramatic escape. In the second part, The Day’s Remnants, Kowalczyk collects reminiscences of Auschwitz to create a mosaic of life in the camp. The third part, Sixteen Returns, is a return through memory to the events of all those years ago, with the present and the wartime past intertwined. Kowalczyk writes: “What does Sixteen Returns mean? Returns where? “To Auschwitz. “Variations of the dream of return: they don’t recognize me, they recognize me but I escape, they recognize me and I go to the gas, and, once, I go straight to the furnace… Returns in which, following dream logic, Auschwitz mixes with the reality of later years to create an autonomous reality ‘with my eyes shut.’ The reality of recurring physical objects, landscapes, buildings, and people. “Over a period of more than 40 years, Auschwitz impacts on things that happened 15 years earlier, or 30 years earlier.
