The Bundeswehr at the former Auschwitz Concentration Camp
Over 100 soldiers from the Bundeswehr Armored Brigade visited the Auschwitz Museum. They were accompanied by German Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping, who joined Polish Defense Minister Janusz Onyszkiewicz in paying homage to the victims. Scharping stated that the German government recognizes its responsibility for all periods of German history, including the evil periods.
"This morning, as a representative of the German Federal Republic, I have laid a wreath at the Wall of Death, here in the main camp, and at the monument in Birkenau. In doing so, I wish to send a clear message: National Socialism is our shared, awful heritage. No one," he said, "can erase the past."
